3 Week Update

November 27th, 2009
So the pups are here, and mom came through the delivery like a champ! As a matter of fact, she did so well coping with the birthing that she nearly had them in bed with me. There was none of the usual panting, circling, restlessness, nesting, etc that accompany whelping, I just barely caught her because I cuddled her while i was sleeping and felt her pushing!!! Eek!

So just a few minutes later...in the -appropriate- place, she delivered the first pup. It took about 2 hours...of course it was 3 in the morning, so I just sleep out with her in the box.

And now we have 3 beautiful babies, after losing a healthy male the second day to a likely smothering. *sad*Everyone is fat, and standing and scooting around, and their eyes are open...mama is ready to work again and has regained every ounce of energy.

We call them the tres amigos, (Biggun, Sister, and Tiny- who is not so tiny) and they are fostering a singleton during mom's breaks...so there is one very fat GSD that may have some very odd tendancies. ;-)

Ahoy! Thar be puppies!

Had an ultrasound today (YES! Dogs get ultrasounds when they're preggers, too!) and got a peek at the wee peanuts inside. Minimum of three for sure, might be a 4th. Everything looks good, we don't fall into any risk catagory, so we're good to go until the xray the week she's due.

For now it's high protien food (yummeh! So much better than her old lamb and rice) lots of loving, and training like normal.
The litter is due on Thanksgiving day. I hope they don't come during dinner...

Saturday is gonna be a romantic day for Lexa!!!
Well, sorta...

Good news...progesterone numbers were up again, so the vet has okayed a Saturday delivery. We will test again friday to make sure she has ovulated, and do the AI on Saturday if everything looks good. Hurray!

Adventures in Breeding...

So Lexa came into heat last week and the progesterone testing has begun...I took her in this morning and will be anxiously awaiting results as this is her third test in as many days and we are quite excited about getting the go ahead to breed! The saturday number took a dip, and I was reassured by Dr. Hess that it is quite normal. Waiting anxiously for that spike!

Meanwhile, training continues, even though the weather has turned nasty today- only 38F and sleet/snow this morning, but with Regionals only a few weeks away, we have to shoot for a good showing as long as we get an ok from the vet. :) Although I think both Lexa and I would be happy to stay in today.

More to come...
